Welcome to 1st Grade!
First grade is a BIG year at MACS! Students grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and friends while gaining confidence and independence along the way.
Our first graders learn in lots of different ways. You may find us working together as a class, learning in small groups, exploring centers, using technology, conducting hands on investigations, creating art, singing, dancing, playing, or taking our learning beyond the classroom on field trips. First grade is busy, active, and full of learning!

What We're Learning
Our first grade curriculum provides students with a strong foundation in all subject areas:
Reading & Language Arts: HMH Into Reading
Phonics: UFLI
Math: enVision Mathematics
Science: McGraw Hill
Social Studies: Studies Weekly
Students are also learning skills that go beyond academics, including how to solve problems, work with others, handle conflicts, and be a positive member of their classroom community.
What to Bring Each Day
First graders should come to school with a backpack, daily folder, snack, and water bottle. Students bringing lunch from home will also need a lunchbox.
We recommend keeping a change of clothes in your child's backpack or cubby just in case. Toys, stuffed animals, and other distracting items should stay home so we're ready to learn!
Homework & Practice at Home
Homework is designed to give students a little extra practice with the skills they're learning at school. Each Monday, students will receive one Reading page and one Math page, both due Friday.
Once sight word lists begin coming home, families can help by practicing those words and reading together regularly.
Students can also use i Ready Reading and Math at home for extra practice. Students who would like additional i Ready time may come to the cafeteria beginning at 7:15 a.m. before school.
How We Measure Progress
Throughout the year, teachers use classwork, assessments, homework, and participation to see what students have learned and where they may need additional support. Our goal is to help every first grader continue growing throughout the year.
Staying Connected
We want our families to feel connected to what's happening in First Grade! Teachers share regular updates, reminders, and newsletters through ParentSquare.
Questions along the way? Families are always welcome to reach out through ParentSquare or email.
We can't wait to see how much our first graders learn, grow, and discover this year at MACS!
